Duane W. Bennett

Passed away on November 6, 2014 at his home in Winston at the age of 72. Duane was born in National City, California on October 17,1942 to Robert and Kathryn Bennett. He grew up in Lemon Grove, California. Following graduation from Mt Miguel High School in 1960, he began college at San Diego State. He attended college for two years and then enlisted in the Navy in January 1963, and served for 4 years as receiver analyst. He served on the USS Wright Naval Ship from March 1967 to May 1967 to provide technical communications during the difficult time for President Johnson's Administration. After serving, he returned to San Diego State to finish college, majoring in Geography, and graduating with honors. He came to Oregon in 1979 with his first wife Creta. Duane is survived by his wife, Karen Bennett, a sister, Margie Bowen of Lemon Grove, California, a son Lloyd Bennett of Roseburg and a daughter, Sherry McBratnie of Sutherlin. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, and Karen's seven children and 18 grandchildren, who grew to love him as well. He is most remembered for his love of animals, bongo drum playing, and ballroom dance. He served as a Wildlife Safari docent for 15 years. Services for Duane will be held Friday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 330 NW Glenhart in Winston. Prior to the service, at the Roseburg National Cemetery within the grounds of the VA Medical Center, will be the interment with military honors at 11:00 a.m.
